Dati and Awilo

The Gadawan Kura, translated from Hausa as "hyena handlers," are a community of traditional medicine men from northern Nigeria. For generations, they have traveled between towns and villages presenting public performances with spotted hyenas, baboons, and pythons while selling traditional medicines and herbal remedies. The tradition is passed down within families, with each generation inheriting its customs and practices.
Photographed in rural northern Nigeria, this portrait series documents members of the Gadawan Kura and their animals
away from the public performances for which they are known, focusing instead on the individuals, their surroundings, and a tradition that continues today.
