AFGHANISTAN
Growing up as an Afghan-American, Malikyar knew two different versions of his motherland: the Afghanistan portrayed in the headlines, and the Afghanistan he knew through his family. Guided by his heritage and relationships built on trust, he created this body of work over multiple years, documenting daily life through moments of family, tradition, spirituality, work, and play. Together, the photographs offer a portrait of Afghanistan shaped by dignity, beauty, and humanity, fulfilling a promise he made as a child to one day return and share the country he always knew existed.
This work was created independently. Every purchase helps fund future stories and supports underserved visual storytellers through Malikyar's nonprofit mentorship program, beginning in Afghanistan and expanding beyond.
Each artwork is handcrafted to the highest standards with museum-grade archival materials. Available framed or unframed, each piece is custom produced and shipped worldwide.
CUBA
Created over multiple years, the Cuba series explores everyday life, memory, and human connection. Rather than documenting the island through its most familiar symbols, Malikyar approached Cuba through relationships built over time, photographing moments of family, childhood, work, play, and daily ritual that often unfolded beyond the view of a first-time visitor. The resulting photographs offer an intimate portrait of Cuba shaped by trust and the quiet beauty of ordinary life.
GADAWAN KURA
The Gadawan Kura, translated from Hausa as "hyena handlers," are a community of traditional medicine men from northern Nigeria. For generations, they have traveled between towns and villages with spotted hyenas, baboons, and pythons, presenting public performances while selling traditional medicines and herbal remedies. Photographed in rural northern Nigeria, this portrait series moves beyond those performances to focus on the individuals, their animals, and a tradition passed down through generations that continues today.
INDIA
Created over multiple years, the India series looks beyond the country's most familiar icons to the moments that give it life. Moving between places of worship, city streets, and everyday rituals, Malikyar photographs scenes where humanity quietly takes center stage. Rich in color, texture, and atmosphere, the series offers a portrait of India shaped by the beauty of its people and the rhythms of daily life.
SOUTH SUDAN
Long closed off to much of the world, South Sudan became the focus of Malikyar's curiosity as soon as it was possible to travel independently through the country. Journeying into some of its most remote regions, he photographed communities whose traditions and ways of life have endured for generations. Together, the photographs offer a portrait of South Sudan through the richness of its cultures and the enduring spirit of its people.
BRAZIL
Few countries are as deeply connected to football as Brazil. Returning to Brazil over nearly a decade, Malikyar documents the game beyond the stadium, photographing moments where childhood, community, and aspiration converge. Together, the photographs reveal football as more than a sport: a source of hope and a place where dreams begin.
